Fiji: Fantasy becomes reality

Digicel Fiji launched a mobile financial service this summer in Fiji. The service, "Digicel Mobile Money", offers the people of Fiji a range of mobile money capabilities including the ability to transfer money to friends and family nationwide, top up mobile phones and pay Digicel postpaid bills. Digicel now plans to link the mobile wallets of subscribers to their bank accounts.

The advent of mobile phone technology is so fast that what was once fantasy is now reality.

They have enabled us to send and take pictures or videos, we can see each other as we speak, we can literally be out of the office but still in touch with what's happening and we can even send money to each other.

Now Digicel Fiji says it is ready to take Fiji to the next level ù one that would enable customers to link their phones or "e-wallets" to their bank accounts.

Stephen Breen, Digicel's mobile money director, said they were at advanced technology stages to enable this and were in discussion with one of the major banks.
