Paymate, the Mumbai-based mobile payments company, has said it is planning to provide a mobile money transfer service in northern Sri Lanka soon.

Ajay Adiseshann, managing director, Paymate, told Telecom Yatra, "We are already present in Sri Lanka and we plan to launch a financial inclusion service, something like Green Money Transfer, in the country soon. The service will address largely northern areas, which have been affected by violence in the last couple of decades. It will help people to stabilise and migrate from those areas to the mainstream by offering insurance, funds transfer etc."

The Green Money Transfer was launched by Paymate in November last year in association with Corporation Bank and Tata Indicom. It allows transfer of money from one person to another through mobile phones, and is targeted at people who don't have bank accounts. At present, Paymate has 100 points of presence (PoPs) between Kerala and Bangalore for this service and it has signed up over 10,000 customers. Adiseshann said the companies plans to scale up the PoPs to 30,000 and register about 250,000 customers by the end of this financial year.
