The activity mirrors similar moves globally to gain scale in what banks and cell phone companies see as a potentially lucrative market, according to user statistics.
Latest studies are predicting that the use of cell phones to make transactions will swell globally in the next 10 years.
Technology news site Cellular News quotes research firm Gartner as estimating that global mobile payment users will exceed 141-million this year, an increase of more than 38% compared with last year, while the volume of mobile payments will exceed $86bn — 76% up from last year’s $48,9bn.
