TabbedOut: Pay Tabs from your Phone
Sunday, January 17, 2010 - 21:38

ATX Innovation CEO and Co-Founder, Rick Orr, speaks with Mobile-Financial About Launching Mobile Payment Services for the hospitality industry.     ATX Innovation Inc., headquartered in Austin, TX, has launched its flagship product, TabbedOut, to allow patrons to pay for bar and restaurant tabs from their phone.  Created by a local group of entrepreneurs with expertise in card payments and security software, ATX Innovation has focused its initial efforts on developing and marketing mobile products for the hospitality industry.

Mobile-Financial.com:  Can you give an example of how somebody would access the TabbedOut application or use the TabbedOut service?

“TabbedOut is available for the iPhone/iPod Touch via the App Store and will soon be available for the Android and BlackBerry/RIM platforms.”

Mobile-Financial.com:  So once a user is setup what can they do with it?

“Essentially, once installed, you select a TabbedOut venue using the app’s location services, securely store your card information, select “Open Tab” and order away.  When you are ready to leave open the app, select your tab and Pay.  After the tab is paid, you can email yourself a receipt for expense tracking purposes.  In the near future, we will compliment this by offering ordering, check splitting and other value-add services for the patron and merchant alike.”

Mobile-Financial.com:  What are customers saying about the TabbedOut service?

“Having launched to the App store just a few days ago, we are very excited with the international response we have received.  Additionally, the owners of our first restaurants and bars are getting new customers who are excited to try out the app.

Mobile-Financial.com:   This is a new concept for the hospitality industry; in your opinion is North America ready for a Mobile Payment Service such as TabbedOut?

“The US is perfect for this solution. Patrons understand the frustration involved with opening and closing tabs.  Whether it’s screaming kids at the end of a meal or a line at the bar for last call, we have all experienced a time when closing out could be made easier with TabbedOut.  Think about how many times you have left your card behind.  Our product takes the plastic out of the equation, allowing for increased speed and customer satisfaction.”

Mobile-Financial.com:   What are the typical challenges you face when trying to implement TabbedOut and have you experienced any of the typical Mobile Payment issues that have hampered some companies in Europe?

“Key to our model is partnering with point-of-sale and other hospitality vendors.  We present a great partnership opportunity as a development partner for such providers.”

The US infrastructure is lagging behind on supporting NFC due to the overhead of purchasing new hardware.  We offer a highly secure alternative without forcing small businesses or chains to upgrade their hardware or payment solutions.”

Mobile-Financial.com:  Americans have a tremendous amount of access to financial services already.  Why will people use TabbedOut?  And what are the benefits that they receive?

“It’s all about convenience and control for our customers.  We don’t replace existing financial services, instead we compliment them while bringing added security to the fraud prone hospitality industry.”

Mobile-Financial.com:  How do you define success for the TabbedOut service, and what are you doing to ensure that you achieve it?

“For us, success is extending our mobile platform support and development partnerships with hospitality vendors so that patrons across the US and abroad have access to the convenience of TabbedOut.

To ensure this is achievable, we have a dedicated team developing for all major smart phone platforms and a straightforward SDK to allow for quick integration with our partners.”
